Having kicked off its first show of the new year in fine style on 19 February last with the innovative sounds of White Rocket, Galway Jazz Club welcomes the renowned Dave Allen Trio from New York to the comfortable surrounds of downstairs in the Cellar Bar on Tuesday 4 March.

Under the guidance of Teresa Glynn, Elizabeth Healy and Suzie Weigle for 2008, Galway Jazz Club's opening night saw the youthful American/Irish 3-piece, White Rocket blow away the appreciative crowd with a set of original, challenging and compelling music that augurs very well as a starting point for this year's upcoming shows.

The Dave Allen Trio's critically acclaimed debut recording, 'Untold Stories', documented a well-crafted group sound rarely found in music today and their follow up, 2007's 'Real and imagined', featured nine new compositions, which were brought to life by the musician's subtlety and virtuosity. Allen is one of the more distinctive jazz guitarists today and is widely respected in the jazz community as both a player ("in the mould of Pat Metheny" – www.jazzguitarforlife.com) and a composer. Upon reviewing Allen's 'Real and Imagined' LP, the New York Times dubbed him 'guitarist with a coolly modernistic sensibility' and he has continually sought to forge a unique vision through his playing and writing; one that features lyrical melodies with lilting, complex rhythms and rich, intricate harmonies.

At the age of 16, Allen was already recognised by Guitar Player Magazine as a talent to watch. Born in Philadelphia, Allen moved to New York in 1988 to attend the Manhattan School of Music. Leading his own groups for the past 16 years, he has increasingly made his presence felt on the New York scene. Allen has worked with many of the most exciting young players in New York City, including Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Ravi Coltrane, Jeff Ballard, Drew Gress, Tony Malaby, Bill McHenry, Donny McCaslin, Loren Stillman, Matt Wilson, Eric McPherson, Gerald Cleaver and many others.

Allen's bassist for the upcoming Galway show is Carlo DeRosa, who is well known in music circles for his unusual virtuosity and has worked with Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer, and Ralph Alessi. Joining them on stage for the evening and making up the trio will be Belfast drummer David Lyttle.

Doors for the show on Tuesday 4 March are at 8.30pm on the evening and tickets are on sale at the door only.
