The loveable, tropical, 1970's ice cream van that is the Mr Whippy Soundsystem rolls back to the Galway market on Sundae 20 June, with heavyweight speaker cones to throw-down some sunshine-funtime, outdoor-dancefloor pleasure!

Originally in for Project 06, the Whippy-sound block party at the market has become an annual 'fringe' event of its own, lovingly looked-forward to each summer by the friendly market-traders and Galway's fun-loving dancers. Mr Whippy, Bass-Berger Ben O'Faolain and friends will be selecting the Dub-Tubs, Latin-Licks, Choc-Steadys and Afro-Feet at the market all day, followed by an after-show session at Bar No. 8 at the docks. The Whippy crew will be back at Bar No.8 for another Summer Sundae on the August Bank Holiday.

Mr Whippy's random top 10 (with the word 'jazz' over-used 10 times too!):

1. Norah Vs. 50 - 'Don't Know Why' - (Jiggy RMX 7" 2008)
Bootleg mash-up of Norah Jones and 50 Cent. Cheeky happy (w)hippy hop!

2. Ala Maca & El Mangui - 'Lucky Bad' - ( Achili Boots 7" 2008)
'Sit back, and listen keenly, as I play for you another musical biscuit....' Flamenco meets reggaeton from Spain, more cheeky happy (w)hippy stuff!

3. Jazz Juice - 'Nuevo Latino' - (Freestyle 7" 2008)
Firin' hi-nrg Latin, homage to mongo beat sample with choppity-chopped piano licks. Ignites my old Whippy Van's 1972 engine!

4. Nightmares On Wax - 'Flip Ya Lid' - ('In A Space Outta Sound' Warp Lp 2006)
My three-year old daughter's favourite! She calls it 'jazzy reggae', and insisted we play it at our Dublin Docklands gig. Turned out to be tune of the day. Little three-year old rascal out-selecting her 'aul fella....

5. Gagle - 'Eastern Voyage' - (Mukatsuku 7" 2008)
DJ Mitsu The Beats drops pianos with bass and beats. Tight, trippity hoppity sort of sound......mmmm 'nice' in the Jazzy Sport sense.

6. Wax Tailor - 'Positively Inclined' - ( 'Hope & Sorrow' LP Lab'oratoiri 2007)
Aaahh more hip hop, this one from criminally overlooked French producer who does a mean line in stern voiced vocal samples and orchestrated atmospherics (yes, I'm talkin' Portishead early 90s styles). This track ratchets up a nice hi-energy positivity, err, like the track title says.....

7. Idea 6 - 'Windy Coast' - (Deja Vu Records 2007)
Italian jazz band - I think put together by Paolo Scotti to sell EVEN more euro-dancefloor jazz to the Japanese - remixed by Italian jazz stallion Gerardo Frisina. Bouncey bubbly bassy with nagging piano stabs and warm happy trombone for that kind of chest-out sunny-smile marching-dance that Daniel does so well down the Arus of a Friday!

8. Derrick Harriott - 'Slave' (12" version) - (Pressure Sounds, late 70s - 1998 re-release)
Long time favourite, riding the roots chariot. Down south style slave chanting, dubby bass line, ......'hear dat sound, de hammers pounding DOWN Down down....'

9. Blax - 'If Ya Coup Did Good' - (Jazzamufin EP Dread Beat 1993)
Yep, from the jazz 90s, with raggamuffin rantings (cough up that phlegm, will ya?!) on a daft dancehall styled Sidewinder riddim (c'mon jazz nerds, THE SIDEWINDER, y'know Lee Morgan, Blue Note and all dat...). All good clean fun!

10. Sarah Webster Fabio 'Sweet Songs' 1976 - on 'a night at the Jazz Rooms' EP Mr Bongo 2007
Woaaaah! If this don't make ya dance, you is needin' to check you ain't seized up! Funky as anything, chanting, introducing the band, jazz poetry, all over well groovy bass and congas and 'wacka wacka' rhythm guitar the way EVERYONE likes it!
