Murder, drink, pornography, dodgy footwear… just some of the elements of a good night out in a Town of Fiction, the debut collection of short stories by the Galway-based Atlantis Collective. This submarine collective is a highly secretive organisation of anarchist scribes. Graduates of the MA in Writing at NUIG, they have concocted this selection of stories over conspiratorial meetings at the Galway Arts Centre. A variety of tales take a darkly comic look into the minds of an assortment of characters. One boy attempts to fly; a lonely bird-watcher finds company and more besides, while a schoolboy works off the stigma of a naff pair of shoes. Oblivious to it all, a dangerous ram roams the streets. In the Town of Fiction, anything is possible. Town of Fiction is 14 stories of the 'what-can happen', the 'what-has-happened' and the 'what-should-never-happen'. The diverse styles of the authors complement each other while the themes range from the local to the global, from the realistic to the fantastic. This rogues and victims gallery invites you into shadowy places where the everyday gives way to something more sinister, enticing you to its cobbled streets, its lost alleyways and its confused thoroughfares. The Atlantis Collective is: Conor Montague, Aideen Henry, Dara O Foghlu, Patricia Byrne, Paul MacMahon, Colm Brady, Maire Robinson, Alan Caden, Bob Whelan, and guest editor, John Kenny. Town of Fiction will be launched in Massimo Bar on William Street West on Friday 24 April as part of the Cúirt Festival and literary libations will be served from 7.30pm. |
