A series of recitals and readings of the work of poet Patrick Kavanagh will take place in Galway this weekend to mark 'Kavanagh Day'. The events are being coordinated by Kavanagh enthusiast Ger Considine and will take place on Saturday 10 July at Galway City Library at 1pm and on Sunday 11 July at the Born Quarter, Newtownsmith at 3pm. Film and theatre actor Ger has had his short documentary 'Deirdre's Passions' screened at the 2009 Galway Film Fleadh and at many film festivals around the country. The documentary tells the story of the Galway author Deirdre Manifold, Kavanagh's one-time girlfriend. Over the weekend Dr Una Agnew of the Milltown-Institute, author of the book 'The Mystical Imagination of Patrick Kavanagh', will speak about the life and times of Kavanagh. Michael D. Higgins will also read a selection of poems, accompanied by musician Ide Ni Fhaolain. Active retired groups, writer/reader groups and Kavanagh fans are all invited to attend the events, and are encouraged to read their favourite Kavanagh poem. Both events are free. |
