One of Japan's foremost pianists returns to Galway for a solo recital on Wednesday 8 October in the Aula Maxima of NUI, Galway at 8pm.

Noriko Ogawa's ongoing recordings of Debussy's piano music (so far 4 volumes have been released) have brought her great acclaim.

For the first part of her concert on Wednesday, she takes the audience on a voyage through Debussy's music, starting with early works such as Clair de Lune, one of his most popular pieces.

She will then give a taste of his later works with two Études where Debussy increasingly started to explore more dissonance in his progressions.

With Dai Fujikura's piece returning, commissioned by Noriko in 2006, she takes a short leap into the music world of the present before transporting the audience right back to the throes of romanticism with Liszt's Sonata in B minor to bring the evening to a dramatic finish.

Fujikura's short piece was written for Noriko after hearing her play Debussy and reflects the same still shimmering sound world. The Liszt Sonata is a piece that Noriko has played throughout her 20 years on the concert platform.

Noriko Ogawa has achieved considerable renown throughout the world since her success at the 1987 Leeds International Piano Competition.

She appears with all the major UK, European, Japanese and US orchestras in concerto repertoire, which ranges from the well-known romantic works to twentieth-century composers, such as Takemitsu, Debussy and Ravel.

Ogawa is also renowned as a recitalist and chamber musician and such appearances have taken her all over the world, including a recent trip to Kenya.

Tickets are €20 for members of Music for Galway. There is a concession rate of €16 and full time students pay €6. They are available form Opus II, St Augustine Street, Galway or from the Music for Galway office on 091-705962.
