It seems to be the year of the ageing rock star this year gigwise in Ireland. Though everyone awaits with bated breath for Oxegen and Electric Picnic, it's the announcements over the last few weeks of high profile gigs for the senior citizens of rock that seem to be causing the most excitement.

The month of June is just chocabloc with musical old fogeys popping up all over the place. Prince plays his 'last ever' Irish show in Croke Park, Leonard Cohen dons his famous blue raincoat for a show in the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, where Iggy Pop will also be rocking out. Lou Reed will be performing his Berlin album in the Marquee in Cork, while the living legend that is Neil Young brings his show to Ireland for two dates in Dublin and Cork.

And with a date for Tom Waits mooted, as well as a definite date for Eric Clapton, one could certainly call this the year of the old codger. The only problem with all these quality gigs is…. which ones to go to!!??
