There's a lot of really good music around at the moment, and seeing as we only get to put forward one album every week in our 'Picks' section (OK, sometimes we do cheat and put in two albums instead) we thought it was about time we pointed you in the direction of a few – well, ten actually - albums and compilations from the last few months that wouldn't be on the commercial side and may have flown in under the radar, but that are definitely worth checking out. So, in no particular order Eine Kleine Nacht Musik – 'Eine Kleine Nacht Musik CD' (Modular) Henry Smithson, the man also known as Riton, comes forth with a stunning homage to out-there early German electronica. Luciano Fabric Mix 41 – the Swiss/Chilean minimal wunderkind puts together a jawdropping 70 minute mix to keep clubbers from moody minimalists to ecstatic house heads more than happy. Vetiver – 'Thing of the past' (Fat Cat) an album of cover versions of songs that have influenced the sound of the dreamy country Californians nu-folkers. Hazy loveliness. Various Artists – 'Southport Weekender Vol 7' double mix CD compiled by beat meisters Jazzanova and the inimitable Mr Scruff, both discs rammed with soul funk disco and deep house grooves. Leila – 'Blood Looms and Blooms' (Warp) lost in a strange fairytale land somewhere between the Herbert and Bjork, Leila's atmospheric vocals and electronic beats have warped (geddit?!) into a gem of an album. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan – 'Sunday at Devil Dirt' (V2) second collaboration from the gravel voiced one and the angelic Campbell. Haunting, Gothic, dark and sublime… you get the picture Mayra Andrade – 'Navega' (Sony France) sun kissed mellow world grooves from the lady who wowed us at the Big Top Tinariwen gig. Not brand new but a beautiful album none the less. Various Artists – 'Top Ranking Santogold –A Diplo Dub' (Mad Decent) crazy 35 track mix tape business in an electroclash/dub/punkfunk kinda way… Micah P Hinson & The Red Empire Orchestra – 'Micah P Hinson & The Red Empire Orchestra' (Full Time Hobby) melancholic dark country from the wee man, given real depth with the addition of the orchestra. Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno – 'Death Of The Revolution' (Tru Thoughts) Latin inspired sizzlin' summer reggae vibes from the scarily prolific Matt Holland. |
