A host of prominent, locally based international acts are set to perform at a gala evening of ethno-cultural celebration at St Nicholas Church, on Friday, 23 May at 7pm.

Café Minor, fresh from having recently featured on the RTé Radio One show, Roots Highway, are to headline the event. This highly regarded Scandinavian quartet, specialising mainly in Gypsy and Klezmer, have been steadily building a dedicated following throughout the west of Ireland since joining forces two years ago.

They will be joined on the night by stunning South African female vocal ensemble, 'The Ladies Of The South', who will treat the audience to an exotic blend of township songs and gospel. Meanwhile, the Dusty Banjos are set to present a tantalising taste of all that is good in Irish traditional music. Also performing on the night are 15-year-old champion Sean Nós singer, Orla Ní Fhinneadha, and new French experimental acoustic outfit, Nozika.

In addition, special guest composer/fiddle player Anna Faulkner from Germany will perform one of her recent works with Rory Mooney on cello. 'The Corner House Suite' fuses the rhythm of a South Indian percussion solo in seven/four time with Irish traditional melodic motives and ornaments.

The composition receives the subtle charm of chamber music through the instrumentation, which creates an interesting new piece of art out of musical elements from disparate parts of the world. Faulkner will also be joined by singer/guitarist Ivan Murray. Recently returned from a tour of the US, they will perform a set of Irish and American tunes and Song for The Little Man, an original composition by Murray.

The event is part of on-going work by the Sean Agus Nua project to celebrate cultural diversity in the city, which last year produced the successful CD, 'éagsúlacht', showcasing the quality and diversity of world music acts now based in the city.

Tickets for the night are €12 and are available at the Amnesty International Shop and Charlie Byrnes Bookshop.
