A Plastic Rose and Panama Kings will play an indie set at De Burgos on Friday 15 August at 8.30pm. A Plastic Rose are purveyors of mid nineties post-hardcore tinged catchy alternative rock, rooted firmly in Belfast, where they have been cutting their teeth on the northern front since August 2006. With a sound that is alternately raucous and sensitive, with lyrics that are bashful and direct, and with a reputation for intense, intimate live shows, the hotly tipped four piece take their unique brand of angst-ridden, self deprecating indie rock to Galway. To date A Plastic Rose have recorded two acclaimed studio EP's, been featured as HotPress Demo of the Fortnight, recorded 2fm and BBC Radio one sessions, appeared on the 2fm 2moro 2our and were invited then to be special guests on 2fm's School of Rock National Battle of the Bands alongside heavyweights like Concerto for Constantine and the Flaws. Panama Kings are a band born of frustration. Theoretically formed at the start of 2007 as a respite for members of other successful Northern Irish acts, they started writing and gigging in earnest towards the end of the year, making a firm impression in double-quick time. With a few simple goals to keep it fun, fresh and to create an indie-rock-dance-party suitable for clubs every bit as much as live shows, the band refuse to acknowledge any form of industry pressure and are resolute in their manifesto. Already drawing comparisons with indie luminaries such as Modest Mouse, Pixies, and the Walkmen, Panama Kings employ razor-sharp Gang Of Four guitars over dance-rock rhythms, frenetic keyboards and just enough Sonic Youth noise to stay this side of melodic, with Niall Kennedy's Superchunk/ Flaming Lips-esque vocal style perhaps being the bands strongest suit. With a steady stream of well-received gigs since their inception, every show is a different kind of chaos and in 12 short months the band have shared the stage with The Young Knives, Ash, The Undertones, Wild Beasts, Malcolm Middleton, Jape and Oppenheimer. Admission is €6. |
