One of Ireland's leading historians, Richard English, will be in Galway City Museum this Saturday at 2.15pm to give a talk on Irish nationalism through the ages, as part of the Cúirt Festival of Literature. It is unusual for Cúirt to have a purely factual history writer as part of the programme, however, following the ground breaking success of English's two latest works, Irish Freedom: The History of Nationalism in Ireland, and Armed Struggle: The History of the IRA, his work is seen as bringing history to a wider audience and opening a great debate on what nationalism actually means. Richard English is a Professor of Politics at Queen's University, Belfast and for the past decade he has been at the forefront of the debate on Irish nationalism. His study of major figures, such as Wolfe Tone, Robert Emmet, Michael Collins, Daniel O'Connell and Gerry Adams, ensures a varied and interesting debate on the issue. Following English's lecture the question of 'What is Nationalism?' will be thrown to the floor for questions and answers. The event begins at 2.15pm and it is advisable to book in advance by calling the museum at 091-532460. |
