An exhibition of the work of past students of Galway Technical Institute's Art Portfolio Preparation course, 1996-2006 is on display in Áras na Mac Léinn, NUIG.

X equals includes work by over 40 exhibitors from award-winning artists and designers. A fully illustrated catalogue, published with the sponsorship of the Arts Council and edited by Dr Gavin Murphy, accompanies the exhibition.

According to Dr Murphy "The work on show for X equals reflects the idea of the Gti Portfolio Course being a creative hub shared with like-minded souls and characterized by an array of practices, attitudes and ambitions.

"There are examples of architecture, ceramics, craft and fashion design, graphics, industrial design, jewellery, painting, photography, print, sculptural installations, sound pieces, video work and textiles. The emphasis on core drawing skills, on colour theory and on the visual forms defining two and three dimensional concepts is testament to this."

Galway Technical Institute is a base for further education in Galway city. The Institute offers a total of 27 full-time FETAC certified Post Leaving Certificate courses in the areas of Art, Design and Media, Business, Computing and Engineering and Health, Care and Beauty.

The Art Portfolio Preparation Course provides students with in depth visual education and exploration. It is recommended for post leaving certificate students. This course is also suitable for mature students with little or no previous art education or experience.

X equals continues at NUI, Galway until Friday 2 March.
