With the full line-up for the Galway Arts festival to be announced in the coming week, a welcome addition to the Big Top nights is the pairing of Tinariwen and Mayra Andrade. Paris-based Andrade's soothing vocals and her beauitful fusion of jazz, Brazilian and African elements make her one of the outstanding voices in world music today. Her debut album 'Navega' was a beguiling delight and, if you enjoy the soothing world sounds of the Buena Vista Social Club or their ilk, you'll fall in love with this young lady from Cape Verde. Desert troubadors Tinariwen have been one of the big success stories in music over the last couple of years. Their third album 'Aman Iman: Water is Life', released in 2007, finally brought all those elements so obvious in their earlier outings together but locked it down to create a true masterpiece, a heady swirling mix of haunting ethnic chanting and singing, low down dirty rhythms and raw Chicago-esque electric guitar blues. A memorable double act not to be missed, Tinariwen and Mayra Andrade play the Arts Festival Big Top on Tuesday 22 July. Tickets for this and all other Big Top shows are on sale now through www.galwayartsfestival.com or www.ticketmaster.ie and usual outlets nationwide. |
