What helps you to be creative?

A couple of bottles of good red wine and a nice fire.

It must be a lovely feeling when a new song first arrives?

It's like there's a new child in the world; you have to care for it and nurture it. It's a wonderful thing.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I'd like to do another record with Roy Harper. Also, because I'm not in that rock and roll thing anymore myself, I'd like to produce some young rock and roll bands.

I'd say that working with Roy was demanding at times?

Yeah of course...some of it was like pulling teeth. But he's Roy Harper, so he's allowed that. I like to think that I brought something different to the table when I worked with him.

Have you met any of your heroes along the way?

In 1996 'The Tea Party' opened up for Page and Plant at a concert in Montreal and that was the beginning of a friendship between me and Jimmy Page, which has been outstanding, just really cool.

Did you pick up some guitar licks off him?

Yeah, I learnt some tricks, but I showed him a few things too, with my interest in Eastern instruments and all. We share an interest in occult philosophy too.

What's the best thing about what you do?

Making people happy through music. If someone says after one of my concerts, 'that guy really moved me', that's what it's all about.

What is the secret to happiness?

Family, friends and red wine!

Jeff Martin plays at Cuba on Wednesday 21 February. Tickets from Bar 903.
