Christy Moore is just one of the major acts that will perform as part of Clifden Community Arts Week, which will take place from 20 to 30 September this year.

ImageThe festival, which had its official launch at the Mariott Hotel this week, will also feature The Dubliners, The Saw Doctors, comedian Neil Delamere and the very best in Irish literary and musical and artistic talent, such as Colm Toibin, John Waters, Dordán, the RTE Concert Orchestra and Joe Boske.

Speaking at the launch, Arts Officer for Galway County Council Marilyn Gaughan detailed her recent visit to the Washington County Museum in Galway’s twin city Portland, Oregon, where the previous issues of the Clifden Anthology are to be found on display. Subsequently the fourth Clifden Anthology will be released as part of this year’s festival.

Gaughan and Arts Officer for Galway City Council James Harrold both mentioned the wonderful sense of intimacy and warmth at the event, “like a group of old friends getting together to celebrate a momentous achievement.”

Harrold went on to point out how very lucky the children in Clifden Community School were to be “surrounded by the wealth of creative talent that comes to Clifden every year for the festival.”

Clifden Community Arts Week started as an event for the children of Clifden Community School, to develop artistic and social skills, and provide an outlet for self-expression and development. Arts Week at the school grew and prospered and the greater community received such pleasure from the event each year that an encompassing and fervent support network grew around it.

Thirty years on and many of the children that attended Clifden Community School are now delighted to donate their professional services to the festival every year.

Such is the level of support from the community that founder of Clifden Community Arts Week and festival director Brendan Flynn admitted that it “was impossible to thank everybody” in his speech at the launch.
