Aware of the pun and the crucial act of one politician famously climbing a pole in one general election, this book, with the subtitle ‘Great Irish Election Stories’, is a wry look at the many unusual and off-the-wall antics that many candidates get up to when fighting a General Election.

In doing so, Shane Coleman reveals some of the wonderful quirks of our PR voting system, such as the candidate who only polled 114 first preferences and yet was elected. The highest poll topper ever in the history of the State was in the same election when Richard Mulcahy polled 22.205 first preferences in the Dublin City North constituency.

The book is jam packed with stories that are illustrated by the delightful cartoons from Fintan Taite. It will certainly result in many a fascinating conversation the length and breadth of Ireland.

Up the Poll - Great Irish Election Stories by Shane Coleman, published by Mentor Books, is currently available online at http://www.kennys.ie/ for €14.99.
