Blood on the Streets - 1916 and The Battle for Mount Street Bridge As the Centenary of Easter 1916 approaches, many hitherto unknown quiet moments of heroism are being investigated and the full stories of these individual acts of bravery are being told for the first time. On 26 of April, the Wednesday of Easter week, a small band of Volunteers killed or wounded 240 British soldiers before they were overpowered and defeated in the bloodiest battle of the Rising. This book, just published by the Mercier Press, explores what really happened during the battle for Mount Street Bridge where three well positioned groups of Volunteers led by Lieutenant Michael Malone, a carpenter by profession, held out, in Thermopylae fashion, against a far greater number of British soldiers arriving from Dun Laoghaire. In scenes that were reminiscent of the terrible warfare of the Western Front in the First World War, British soldiers advanced under heavy fire against rebel positions. The book contains a blow by blow account of the battle and other events surrounding the Rising, including the only written account by a British Army of the executions at Kilmainham Jail in the aftermath of The Rising. Told in a tight focussed manner, this story gives an in-depth, simplified account of this vital encounter and fills yet another gap in the historiography of the Easter Rebellion. Blood on the Streets by Paul O'Brien is currently available online at www.kennys.iefor €12.99, now with free shipping on all orders throughout Ireland. |
