Comedian Des Bishop paid a visit to the children of Scoil Bhríde in Menlo last week, who are learning Chinese in School. Bishop, who is famous for his comedic stance on language and culture, spoke to the children in Chinese and was quite impressed with the replies he received.
Des spent some time in China recently and shared his own personal experiences of the country, its festivals and food with the children. As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, the comedian also visited other classes in the school to converse with them in Irish.
Scoil Bhríde in Menlo was one of 20 schools in Galway to be selected to take part in what is known as the China Project Ireland. As part of the project, a Chinese language teacher who is based in University College Cork travels to Galway once a week to teach Chinese language and culture classes in ScoilBhríde to the 5th and 6th year Classes. The teacher, Yuan Wenfeng, is based in Scoil Bhríde every Wednesday morning.
