Galway County Council has started work on safety measures on the N18 outside Claregalway National School.
The works, which include the installation of traffic islands and a pedestrian crossing outside the school, have been welcomed by Independent Councillor for the Oranmore Electoral Area, Jim Cuddy, who said he was hopeful that they would be completed before the national school re-opens in September.
“This work will greatly improve safety for children crossing the road and it will complement the new footpaths which extends to the Claregalway Corporate Park, where I understand another pedestrian crossing is to be installed.
“Teachers and parents have long been campaigning for these safety measures and I am delighted that they will finally be completed.”
Cllr Cuddy said he had also asked the county council to consider a cycle lane along the new footpaths to the Claregalway Corporate Park.
“The new footpaths are three metres wide and can more than adequately accommodate a cycle lane,” he said.
