Galway City Council is to invest €10,000 in the rugby test that is to take place in the city early next year.
Connacht Rugby recently secured the rights to host the Irish Wolfhounds v England Saxons international rugby fixture on 25 January, with an expected attendance of over 8,000 people. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports and RTE2.
A proposal was put forward at Monday’s meeting of Galway City Council that the local authority invest €10,000 to “showcase Galway in regional, national and international media” through the game.
Cllr Peter Keane, supported by Cllrs Ollie and Michael Crowe, said the event would “undoubtedly be a boost” for both Connacht Rugby and the city and had the potential to “contribute handsomely” to the local hospitality sector, on what would “otherwise be a quiet weekend”.
The motion was subsequently passed by a majority vote. The game will be titled the ‘Visit Galway’ test and a “significant return” is expected on the partnership.
