An enterprising Galway teenager was surprised with his very own ice cream vendor bike on Friday by children’s charity Make-A-Wish, which grants the wishes of children living with life-threatening medical conditions.
Originally from North Dublin, Ciarán Walsh lives with the kidney condition Renal Dysplasia. He has attended school on Inis Oirr for the past three years and lives on the Aran Islands during the summer months.
Ciarán thought he was going on a shopping trip to Galway City on Friday when he was surprised with his wish, an ice cream vendor bike, at Woodies Store, Wellpark, Galway. Ciarán is a bit of an entrepreneur and wanted to put his business acumen to the test and earn some pocket money on Inis Oirr from tourists and islanders alike. The ice cream bike, which was customised specially for Ciarán, was brought out to the island on the ferry.
Woodie’s have just launched the ‘WOW! Working on Wishes’ nationwide fundraising event for Make-A-Wish Ireland, which will see Woodie’s staff taking on a road cycle as well as static in-store bike challenges. The Woodie’s WOW! ambition is to raise enough money to grant 37 children’s wishes – the equivalent of one wish for each of the 37 Woodie’s stores nationwide.
