Galway caused a shock to retain their TG4 Connacht Ladies football title against a disappointing Mayo in Tuam Stadium.
Galway scored a four-point victory against Mayo at a roasting Tuam venue with Edel Concannon hitting 0-6 for the Tribeswomen in a super performance from the Galway girls.
Five Cora Staunton points and a 1-3 tally for Aileen Gilroy saw the Division 1 finalists Mayo fall short, as Galway held firm to take the Mayo scalp for the second season in a row.
Mayo fluttered away a ten-point lead against Galway in last year’s provincial decider, but they were never allowed to build up that kind of advantage on this occasion as Galway boss Barry Downey had his tactics right.
Galway were 0-6 to 0-1 ahead midway through the first half before Gilroy netted to bring Mayo back into contention.
At half-time, Galway led by 0-9 to 1-3 and held out comfortably in the second half as temperatures soared and tempers frayed, with Aoibheann Daly and Concannon proving the difference with good showings.
