			<description>
The sailors in the Olympics have seen races delayed and even postponed due to the absence of wind. Not so for the cruiser fleets from GBSC who ventured out on Wednesday in wind speeds gusting up to 26 knots. The rain was falling heavily, which made for unpleasant conditions but exhilarating experiences.

Race four of the Galway Bay Sailing Club's Late Summer Dinghy Series was another race in heavy winds that tested the competitors and their boats. After the respite of last week's light airs it was back to business as usual – strong winds and a big swell coming from the West - think big grey sky and big grey sea. It was another excellent turnout of nineteen boats, and a total of 31 sailors hit the start line for the evening's racing in 15 – 18 knots of breeze.

Sunderland four-piece The Futureheads are both an intriguing and powerful mass of contradictions. They are a band who - like all the best bands - look and feel like a gang, but who, in this instance, can rarely agree on anything at all. A band who have deliberately set themselves only short-term, low-key goals, but are, realistically, on the verge of going all the way. A band who recognize and salute the DIY ethic, while simultaneously detesting its implicit under-achievement. A band who can accurately cite Devo, Queen, Fugazi and Kate Bush as influences, but who have carved out their own instantly identifiable sonic niche.

			<title>Stanhoped humour this September</title>
			<link>http://www.galwayindependent.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=7933&amp;Itemid=89</link>
			<description>

Loud-mouthed vagrant, Libertarian booze-hound, subversive truth-sayer, self-confessed lover of losers and taboo-thrashing rebel; these descriptions all hint at the compellingly erratic comic genius that is Doug Stanhope. Since turning to comedy over fifteen years ago, he's been another maverick in a fine lineage of outspoken, often misconstrued stand-ups that reads like a humour hall of fame; and though certainly similar to the greats like Lenny Bruce, Sam Kinison, Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks, Stanhope is certainly his own man.

The news last week of the passing of Tuam native Mons Tommie Shannon came as a huge shock to all who knew him. Fr Tommie was a great friend and follower of Galway and Mayo sport. Just days before his passing he requested tickets for this year's All Ireland hurling final although Galway were not involved. A brother-in-law of the late Sean Purcell, Fr Tommie had a passionate interest in Galway football and was proud of their achievements. He will be fondly remembered.

One of my most abiding wishes and, I am sure, of many people. is that we all live in peace together on this beautiful world of ours. We can see in its entire splendour what peace can do for people when we look at the example of Northern Ireland. But you only have to watch the news or read the papers to find conflict and suffering in every corner of the world.
