The Moycullen community remain in shock following the sudden death of a popular local woman who was attacked by dogs at the weekend.
Teresa McDonagh (64), who was from Moycullen, was visiting a relative at Knockarasser on Sunday afternoon 4 June, when the incident occurred.
Sometime after her arrival at the house, she was attacked by two bullmastiffs, a large breed of dog.
Emergency services were called to the scene but sadly, Ms McDonagh died at the scene from her injuries. It is understood that both dogs were shot at the scene by a neighbour who came to help her.
Gardai contacted the Department of Agriculture and a vet and an assistant removed the dogs from the scene. A Garda spokesperson said, “This was very distressing for anyone who was at the scene. The community as a whole is a very close knit area. This is a terrible tragedy.”
Following a post mortem examination at UHG, a file is currently being prepared for the Coroner’s Office.
Galway West TD, Sean Kyne led tributes to the popular woman.
He said, “I would like to sympathise with the McDonagh and O’Donnell families on Teresa’s very tragic passing. The whole community is stunned and saddened. Teresa was a well known member of the Moycullen community. Originally Teresa O’Donnell from Lettermullen, her family is very involved in music and sport. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas sioraí di.”
