It was good news all round when An Taoiseach announced the creation of an extra 200 new jobs at BioWare in the Parkmore Business and Technology Park on Monday. Electronic Arts (EA) and BioWare’s decision to locate its customer service centre here is once more an endorsement of our skilled work force in Galway and testament to both government support and our local ‘cluster’ in the sector.
Also on Monday the upcoming MeetWest 2011 Business Networking Event was launched in County Buildings, attended by representatives of the organising partners Galway County Council, Galway City Council, Galway County and City Enterprise Board, Roscommon County Council, Roscommon Enterprise Board, Mayo County Council, Mayo Enterprise Board, Udaras na Gaeltachta and Enterprise Ireland Frank Dawson, Roscommon County Manager and Chair of the Steering Group for the event said at the launch of the opportunities that the event would create for business in the west. Day 1 of the event (November 21) will include a conference, workshops and a networking dinners.
Speakers at the Conference will include John Concannon JFC Manufacturing, Tuam, on our screens recently in the Secret Millionaire programme, and Kerryman Jerry Kennelly who last weekend attended the Entrepreneur Blue Sky Day event that he set up as the co-founder of the Young Entrepreneur Programme and Awards.
Kennelly is the founder of Tweak.com and in 2006 he sold his company Stockbyte for €100 million. He said: ‘We are trying to impart the message that you don’t need to be a genius or a rocket scientist to be an entrepreneur, you can take control of your own destiny from your own place.’
This is a key message for the MeetWest 2011 event. The conference at the event is entitled: ‘Business in the West: Local to Global’ and as well as Jerry Kennelly and John Concannon speakers will include John Perry, TD, Minister for Small Business, Gerry Kilcommins, Vice President Global Vascular Operations and General Manager Galway, Medtronic, Helen Ryan CEO Creganna Medical Devices, and Mary Gleeson, Gleeson’s Townhouse and Restaurant, Roscommon and Good Food Ireland Circle Workshops will include Exporting, Procurement in the Public and Private Sector and Tax Credits. Day 2 of MeetWest 2011 will bring a new concept in Networking to the West of Ireland. In conjunction with Event Software Manager Futurallia, delegates will have up to ten pre arranged meetings with other companies which whom they have been specifically matched in terms of doing business. www.meetwest.ie.

The September Business After Hours will be hosted by the Galway Independent newspaper tomorrow, Thursday 29 September, in their offices in the Galway Retail Park, Headford Road at 6pm.
