A record 41 Galway hookers participated in this year's Féile an Dóilín, the largest ever gathering of Galway Hookers at a regatta. The figure, smashing the previous record of 34, included the newly-built Anna Jude.

Galway City Council won the premier Water Safety Award for promoting water safety in Ireland for 2006. The award was presented in September Minister of State Tony Killeen, at 4pm in the Custom House, and is given to a local authority every year by Irish Water Safety.

Patches, the Galway owned TP52, finished third in the Trofeo de Portugal in September, after sailing was cancelled due to no wind for a second day
in succession. The Trofeo de Portugal is one of six regattas in the
Breitling MedCup series and this means that Patches is lying fourth in the
series with one regatta to go in Hyeres, France in September.

Women of Windsurfing Irelandd (WOWI) received a substantial grant from the Sports Council of Ireland to continue their work in promoting windsurfing among women. The €17,000 grant was used to hold a series of weekend windsurfing seminars in various schools around the country, one of which was the Rusheen Bay Windsurfing School.

Galway Bay Sailing Club embarked on a project with a difference in September: teaching people in wheelchairs to sail. The club secured funding from the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism to purchase a 'Challenger' multi-hulled dinghy, specially designed with disabled people in mind.

As part of a funding round worth €20 million, NUIG marine researchers received €9.2 million from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and the Department for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources in September.
