Originally from Lymington in the South of England, it was inevitable that John Roberts would go to sea. He grew up near Southampton, famous for its nautical college and his father was a naval captain. John attended the world-renowned Warsash Nautical College in nearby Southampton.

The West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association (WIORA) West Coast Championships was the largest sailing meeting on the West Coast in 2007. The competition was keen, the sailing demanding and the shore side atmosphere was electric, and it is all due to happen again this year, hosted by Clifden Boat Club.

The Swedish capital, Stockholm, has been announced as the final stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 before its finish in the Russian Baltic port of St Petersburg in July 2009. During the stopover, between 16 to 25 June 2009, Stockholm will also host an in-port race as well as a pro-am race in its famous archipelago.
