Outboard motor thefts

The owners of motor boats are urged to make sure their boats are securely locked at all times. There have been a number of thefts of outboard motors recently especially in the west of the county. If anyone has any information in relation to these recent thefts they asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000.

New Aran freight service

A new freight service has begun running to the Aran Islands. The service, which began on Tuesday 1 January, is to run until 2012 and was the subject of a contract between the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Lasta Mara Teo.

 
Full-scale revival for hookers

A record 41 Galway hookers participated in this year's Féile an Dóilín, the largest ever gathering of Galway Hookers at a regatta. The figure, smashing the previous record of 34, included the newly-built Anna Jude.

 
Clifden Boat Club holds first WIORA

Clifden Boat Club held its first WIORA offshore yacht race during July, facing a week of heavy weather which ended with warm sunshine and excellent sea conditions.

 
Galway City Council wins Water Safety gong

Galway City Council won the premier Water Safety Award for promoting water safety in Ireland for 2006. The award was presented in September Minister of State Tony Killeen, at 4pm in the Custom House, and is given to a local authority every year by Irish Water Safety.

Hoax costs Coastguard €5000

A hoax emergency call made from a boat off Clifden in August cost the Irish Coastguard €5000.

 
Patches finishes third in Portugal

Patches, the Galway owned TP52, finished third in the Trofeo de Portugal in September, after sailing was cancelled due to no wind for a second day in succession. The Trofeo de Portugal is one of six regattas in the Breitling MedCup series and this means that Patches is lying fourth in the series with one regatta to go in Hyeres, France in September.
