Last weekend, Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 April, the Royal Cork Yacht Club hosted the Schools National Team Racing Championship 2008.

A freshening West/North-West wind gave rise to near perfect conditions for the first race in the Falcon Fires Cruiser Race series. It was obvious to spectators from the beginning of the race, as the boats made their way to the start line, that the race would be between the leading pair - both 1720s.

Perfect wind conditions last Tuesday prevailed during the first race of the Summer Dinghy Series at Galway Bay Sailing Club. The competitors in both the Mono and Multi Hull fleet enjoyed great sailing around a challenging course set by the Race Officer, Miriam Croke.

A new series on TG4 will feature ten novice sailors facing the immense challenge of learning to sail from scratch on a Galway hooker or 'gleoiteog'. 'Scaoil Seol' will see four of the novices race against Ireland's most established sailors at the prestigious Cruinniú na mBád in Kinvara.

In one of Commander Bill King's six books, he describes himself as "a horrid small boy and rather an untalented one". Whatever the truth of that description when he was a child, the 97-year-old commander is neither horrid nor untalented, as the briefest of meetings will attest. Despite his age and profound deafness, (caused by "nine six inch guns being set off under my nose when I was 18"), he is charming, with a wicked sense of humour and an unrivalled zest for life.
