Growing up in Limerick, Tom Moore's childhood had a common feature with many of his friends: summers spent in Kilkee. Every day spent at the County Clare resort was an education for Tom, and watching the divers there instilled in him an interest in the sport that resurfaced years later.

Galway RNLI Lifeboat went to the rescue of a group of people presumed stranded on Hare Island last Wednesday, 9 January. The group, five French nationals, had set up camp on the island for the night and said they did not wish to be rescued.

The NUIG/GMIT Sub Aqua Club will run a 24-hour dive in aid of the
Galway Lifeboat Station this weekend, from 1pm on Saturday 19 to 1pm on Sunday 20 January in the Salthill Atlantaquaria. Collections will be made on the day for the RNLI, while the 12 participants also have sponsorship cards. The Lifeboat Station will have a stand at the aquarium from 2pm to 5pm where visitors can find out more about the station's work.

The owners of motor boats are urged to make sure their boats are securely locked at all times. There have been a number of thefts of outboard motors recently especially in the west of the county. If anyone has any information in relation to these recent thefts they asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000.

A new freight service has begun running to the Aran Islands. The service, which began on Tuesday 1 January, is to run until 2012 and was the subject of a contract between the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Lasta Mara Teo.

A record 41 Galway hookers participated in this year's Féile an Dóilín, the largest ever gathering of Galway Hookers at a regatta. The figure, smashing the previous record of 34, included the newly-built Anna Jude.

Galway City Council won the premier Water Safety Award for promoting water safety in Ireland for 2006. The award was presented in September Minister of State Tony Killeen, at 4pm in the Custom House, and is given to a local authority every year by Irish Water Safety.
