Without an American accent and a mop of sun-bleached hair, Donncha Foley doesn't look like your typical surfer dude. But, in fact, he's the man behind the resurgence of surfing in Galway.

 
Stockholm joins Galway as Ocean Race stopover

The Swedish capital, Stockholm, has been announced as the final stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 before its finish in the Russian Baltic port of St Petersburg in July 2009. During the stopover, between 16 to 25 June 2009, Stockholm will also host an in-port race as well as a pro-am race in its famous archipelago.

Clifden Boat Club was victorious in the Dubarry West Coast Super League 2007 and the overall title of the league.

Although he graduated from NUIG more than a year ago, Barry McGill is still tied to his alma mater because of his number one hobby. As a member of one of the college's most successful clubs, the sub aqua club, he still sees his diving buddies regularly and gets involved in club activities.

 
Galway company at forefront in renewable energy

Galway-based Wavebob Ltd is now at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives, with Andrew Parish, the company's CEO, hailing the Ocean Energy Initiative launched last week by Energy Minister Eamon Ryan as the Government's most progressive step to date in wave energy development in Ireland.

Growing up in Limerick, Tom Moore's childhood had a common feature with many of his friends: summers spent in Kilkee. Every day spent at the County Clare resort was an education for Tom, and watching the divers there instilled in him an interest in the sport that resurfaced years later.

 
Lifeboat in mistaken rescue attempt

Galway RNLI Lifeboat went to the rescue of a group of people presumed stranded on Hare Island last Wednesday, 9 January. The group, five French nationals, had set up camp on the island for the night and said they did not wish to be rescued.

 
Sub aqua club fishy fundraiser!

The NUIG/GMIT Sub Aqua Club will run a 24-hour dive in aid of the Galway Lifeboat Station this weekend, from 1pm on Saturday 19 to 1pm on Sunday 20 January in the Salthill Atlantaquaria. Collections will be made on the day for the RNLI, while the 12 participants also have sponsorship cards. The Lifeboat Station will have a stand at the aquarium from 2pm to 5pm where visitors can find out more about the station's work.

 
Outboard motor thefts

The owners of motor boats are urged to make sure their boats are securely locked at all times. There have been a number of thefts of outboard motors recently especially in the west of the county. If anyone has any information in relation to these recent thefts they asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000.
