The second race of the dinghy Summer Series took place on Tuesday 3 June in a brisk south westerly wind. A triangular course with a long beat, a short reach and a long run was set by race officer Aoife Lyons. Several of the multihulls were highly premature in the start sequence and a general recall was issued. Second time around the boats got away cleanly and were straight onto the beat.

Each year as part of the King of the Bay series, GBSC holds an overnight Race around the Aran Islands. It is a great sight to see the many boats heading out from Nimmo's Pier at 10pm as they take on the challenge of a long and sometimes difficult race. Depending on the wind strength and direction the race can take anything from seven to 12 hours to complete.

Fr. Barry Hog, President of St Mary's College, Neil Carney Operations Manager of the Galway Stopover, Harbour master Brian Sheridan and Bartley Fannin, Principal of St Mary's College at the school's sports hall - the largest in Galway - which will be used by the Volvo Ocean Race as the venue for scrutinising the sails of the racing boats.

One of the Galway stopover's masterminds, John Killeen is originally from Athlone. After a childhood spent on rowing boats on the Shannon, it was only natural that John would continue to stay near the water, and when he moved to Dublin for college in UCD he began to sail.
