Labour TD for Galway West Derek Nolan has called for an increase in the number of Community Employment (CE) Scheme places in the forthcoming Budget.
Mr Nolan said a total of 1,499 people are currently involved in Community Employment Schemes in Galway, with 1,147 based in schemes in Galway County and 352 in Galway City.
“Community Employment Schemes are extremely valuable to the community. Tens of thousands of people across the country have benefited from these schemes since they were first introduced. Involvement in a CE scheme allows those who are unemployed to gain vital skills and experience to re-enter the workforce and return a work routine. The work done in return benefits communities and local organisations,” he explained.
Mr Nolan added that he had discussed the matter with Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton and asked her to increase the number of places available in these schemes in the forthcoming Budget.
“Galway has a proud record of running successful CE Schemes. Now it is time to strengthen this important infrastructure and develop a new generation of activation measures that will continue to support our communities.”
