As the mass influx of students arrives in the city for the start of the academic year, the pressure is on to find accommodation in Galway. Students wanting to rent have a number of different options. One is renting a private room or apartment in an existing shared student property, while another is renting a house or flat with friends.
Lodging with a local family is a third possibility - and usually the least expensive option for young people living away from home. Meals with the family may or may not be included in the basic rent (this should be checked in advance).
According to USI, the ten most important factors in renting accommodation are:
- Convenience to college and to public transport.
- Ensuring street lighting in the area is good.
- Check for dampness, especially behind beds.
- Clarify what's included in the rent.
- Get the landlord's name, address and contact number in the event of a problem arising.
- Ensure the landlord is registered with the Private Residential Tenancies Board.
- Establish the terms of any deposit to be paid and get a receipt.
- Beware of committing to a 12-month lease when the academic year is only nine months.
- Find out precisely how the rent is to be paid, for example by cash or direct debit and how often.
- Keep a record of all monies paid to the landlord.
- USI will send out rent books to all individual student unions at the start of September
