Galway-based architectural firm Heffernan and Associates Architects is celebrating 30 years as one of Ireland's leading energy conservation architects.

Established in 1978, the primary focus of the practice was housing; one-off housing and group housing schemes. Today, this focal point has resulted in Heffernan and Associates developing skills and applying them to clients in industry, commerce and leisure. With strong energy efficiency policy, which serves to set them apart from the rest, and through working closely with the Galway Energy Agency Heffernan brings the practice of energy conservation through passive and active means to all their projects.

The practice's associate architect, Diarmuid Hynes, is a registered Independent Building Energy Rating Assessor after qualifying from the Building Energy Rating Assessors Course this year with distinction. This allows him to carry out building energy rating assessments and submit them to Sustainable Energy Ireland for publication on the Building Energy Rating Register. This is extremely beneficial for clients of Heffernan and Associates as current regulation as part of the 2006 Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, states that a Building Energy Rating certificate, which is effectively an energy label, will be required at the point of sale or rental of a building, or on completion of a new building.
