UPC Ireland, ntl's new parent company, last week announced that Galway phone customers can expect a substantial reduction in their phone bills.

By installing UPC's Digital phone service, customers will no longer need a traditional telephone line, and will save themselves €24.18 in line rental before they even make a phone call. The company says that customers will now pay less for voice calls and broadband together than they would typically have paid for line rental alone.

Over 26,500 Galway homes are already enabled to receive digital TV, Broadband internet and digital phone from UPC. Customers switching to UPC will be able to plug their existing telephones into the UPC connection, as used by 2.7 million customers worldwide.

According to Ronan Gallagher, telephone product manager of UPC Galway, the announcement demonstrates that the company is serious about offering real competetition to customers in Galway. "As a result, we are uniquely placed to pass on savings of over ?315 per annum to our customers, that represents over 50 per cent savings on customer's bills. We're delighted to offer alternative infrastructure competition to eircom and switching over to our service couldn't be easier," he said.
