Galway premiere music venue The Róisín Dubh has scooped this year's IMRO Connaught Live Music Venue of the Year Award 2008. The awards, which were held on Saturday last, saw top venues such as Vicar Street scooping three awards, Cyprus Avenue taking two awards and The Stables in Mullingar taking home one accolade. The awards acknowledge the central role that live music venues play in developing and supporting the music community in Ireland. Live music venues provide superb, quality entertainment to the public and a platform for Irish artists across all genres of music. The prizes were awarded based on the votes of over 6,000 IMRO members across Ireland. Venues were assessed on a number of criteria including general ambience, staging, sound, lighting, diversity of music, artist relations and venue promotion. "There are four ingredients that make a great gig - a great artiste, a great audience, great technicians and a great venue. It's time now to salute those venues that care about the artistes, technicians and audiences," said Keith Donald, Chairman of the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO). Paying tribute to the venue's patrons, Gugaí of the Róisín Dubh said the award was recognition of what the venue had done in the past. "The renovations on the Róisín Dubh have only been done a couple of years. It was the first year of the IMRO awards, so it was great to in best in Connaught and also to be nominated for one of the best venues in Ireland. We were one of the four to be nominated outside of Dublin. "The award will now take pride of place in the bar next to Richard Hawley's Worchester sauce!" he added. |
