Minister Eamon O Cuív was on home ground on Monday for the official opening of Proxy Biomedical's new manufacturing facility in Spiddal, Co Galway

Speaking at the official opening on Monday, Minister O Cuív said that this sort of investment and high-end employment was very important to the region.

"Proxy Biomedical is an innovative and sophisticated company, and a major world player in the development of biomaterials for regenerative medicine," said the Minister. "The company specialises in the research, development, production and marketing of biomaterials for the repair and regeneration of tissue. These activities will now take place in this very facility. I understand that in this field, it is very uncommon for all these areas to take place under the one roof, and this is an indication of the high standard of facility sought by an expanding company like Proxy Biomedical.

"I applaud Údarás na Gaeltachta and its officials for their achievement in inducing a company like Proxy Biomedical to base itself here in Conamara by providing it with such a high-quality manufacturing plant. This company has been operating in Galway for several years now, and when they wanted to expand, the Údarás were ready with an appropriate facility.

"The company currently employs 16 people and I believe that it plans to employ a further 16 employees over the next two years. These are high-end jobs; half of the employees will be engaged in research and development. Such high-level employment is extremely important for the region and will benefit the local community into the future.

"I wish every success to the founder and Managing Director, Peter Gingras and to the entire team at Proxy Biomedical."
