The Galway Bay Hotel has been honoured with one of the most prestigious awards in the hospitality industry, with manager Dan Murphy winning 'Hotel Hospitality Manager of the Year' at the Irish Hospitality Institute Awards 2007 last Thursday, 29 November.

Mr Murphy was was appointed General Manager of the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill in April 1999. Under his dynamic leadership, the hotel was last year awarded the Best Four Star Hotel in Ireland for 2005.

He had previously worked in Five Star Hotels such as Ashford Castle and Adare Manor, as well as a five year stint at the Chicago Hilton and Towers Hotel.

According to a spokesperson for the Galway Bay Hotel: "Dan has demonstrated exceptional ability in pioneering initiatives and implementing creative and successful projects within the hotel.

"He can only be described as a marvel when it comes to the amount of energy he injects into his role as General Manager, and also into the team surrounding him."

The award ceremony, held at the Four Seasons Hotel, was hosted by President of the Irish Hospitality Institute, Ewan Plenderleith. Mr Plenderleith is also General Manager of the Herbert Park Hotel.

The Irish Hospitality Institute Management Awards are created to distinguish the exemplary and innovative actions of Senior Managers in the Irish Hotel Industry.

Born and raised in Cork city, Mr Murphy is a hotel and catering graduate of Cork Institute of Technology. He frequently returns to the Institute as a guest speaker to hotel and catering students to share his experiences in the industry.
