Galway-based company Creganna Medical Devices has won the 2007 Frost and Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award, which is a prestigious award within the technology industry.

CEO Helen Ryan told the Galway Independent, “We are pleased to be recognised by Frost and Sullivan for this prestigious award. This accolade endorses our strategy to develop innovative technologies and solutions that are of value to our customers.”

Creganna bagged the award for the company’s pioneering work on non-invasive medical devices such as PoleVault, MicroFlex and Fusion Technology. The award will be presented to the company on Wednesday 3 October next, in Dublin.

Creganna is the first Irish company to have won an award in this category, highlighting the future opportunities for the Irish economy in the fields of technology and science.

Creganna’s Galway location has enabled the company to build strong relationships with its customer base. This has in turn facilitated the development of innovative technologies closely aligned to customers’ needs. The company is about to double its manufacturing space in Galway with the opening of its third facility in Parkmore West Business Park in September.

The PoleVault hypotube, which was developed in response to product features demanded by medical device manufacturers, improves kink resistance in stent placement catheters. According to Creganna, the device is a critical component of minimally invasive catheters, and is used in conjunction with balloons and stents to open up clogged cardiac arteries. It is unique for having 40 per cent more strength than other devices of its type.

MicroFlex, a micro tube for small vasculature applications, and Fusion Technology, a breakthrough solution for welding using patented technology, are innovative alternatives to current, more expensive product solutions, the company says.

Developed by leading scientists and engineers at Creganna’s dedicated R&D Centre in the Parkmore West Business Park, all three devices have made a huge contribution to advancement of minimally invasive surgery.

“Technology development at Creganna’s Innovation Centre is underpinned by extensive technical, scientific and market research,” noted Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sowmya Rajagopalan. “Creganna consistently produces innovative products and technologies that assist medical device manufacturers improve outcomes for patients.”

The Frost and Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award recognises Creganna’s ability to successfully develop and introduce new technologies which have made a significant contribution to the medical device industry. Selections were made by Frost and Sullivan after extensive research with major market participants.

Ranked among the global top ten outsourcing providers to the medical device industry and listed in Europe’s top 500 growth companies, Creganna has recently expanded its US presence with the opening of a facility in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Employing over 400 staff worldwide, Creganna - Ireland’s largest indigenous company in the medical device sector - has sales and manufacturing facilities in Ireland, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Finland.
