IDA accused of neglecting East Galway E-mail

The IDA (Industrial Development Agency) is blatantly neglecting East Galway, according to Galway East Independent TD Paddy McHugh.

Deputy McHugh has compiled information in relation to the efforts by the IDA to attract foreign direct investment into the East Galway region and he has described their efforts to date as being a "dismal failure".

The Deputy said, "For some time I have been deeply dissatisfied with the performance of the IDA in the East of the county and from the information which I have compiled my worst fears have been confirmed.

"I have compiled information in relation to the activities of the IDA in a number of East Galway towns and I was dismayed to discover that some towns had not been visited by any potential foreign direct investor and other towns had been visited on only a handful of times.

"No visits took place for potential foreign direct investors to Mountbellew, Glenamaddy, Athenry, Headford, Kinvara or Portumna during the past five years, while for the entire 12 months of 2005 only one visit took place to Tuam and one visit took place to Gort and no visit took place to Loughrea.

"I find it appalling that in towns such as Tuam where ?3.5m has been spent on developing an industrial park that the IDA only brought one potential investor on a site visit to the town for the whole of 2005."
