ICES, the property investment and wealth creation group, will host founder Darrell O'Dea at its October meeting.

Mr O'Dea will speak on the issue of property investment and whether it is still a good way to make a living.

According to organisers, Mr O'Dea doesn't 'run with the herd' of conventional wisdom in property investment, as he approaches it as a business that has to demonstrate fundamental benefits to him before he begins to consider investing.

The primary attraction for him is often cash flow – that is, the amount of money that a property will regularly bring in after all the expenses have been deducted.

This would have to satisfy him before he considers the amount that a property will appreciate or even depreciate (which might be a more familiar experience for many local investors at the moment). After spending many years in the UK in conventional employment, O'Dea returned to Ireland with the notion of investing his time and money in such a way that would produce a regular - but passive - income.

Realising he was at the bottom of a new learning curve, he sought out like-minded individuals to help educate himself. This resulted in forming Irish Complementary Education Systems (the ICES Group). One of his co-founders, Ian Lawlor, became a presenter on RTÉ TV's House Hunter programme. ICES does not give financial advice or sell financial products, but attracts a wide variety of people to speak at its meetings on topics related to money and creating wealth.

It has become a regular forum for people to ask and learn about these subjects – which aren't particularly well covered in conventional education, despite being an essential part of everyday life in the developed world.

The event will take place on Wednesday 8 October at the Menlo Park Hotel. It starts at 7.30pm and there will be an admission fee of €25 at the door, which includes tea and coffee midway through the evening.
