IBEC West has called for an end to delays in the Corrib Gas project, saying the country's dependence on imported gas means the project must not be subject to further delays. According to the business organisation's West of Ireland Director, John Brennan, Ireland is 90 per cent dependent on imported gas, exposing us to risks of supply interruption and price volatility. Mr Brennan has welcomed the recent announcement from the Corrib Gas Partners regarding the modified onshore pipeline route and has called for an immediate end to delays in progressing the project. In a statement, Mr Brennan said, "It is imperative that people realise the regional and national significance of this project. An independent report from Goodbody Economic Consultants on the Corrib Gas field, published at the end of 2007, highlighted the fact that this project could create up to 800 jobs during the construction phase, with an estimated 130 permanent jobs for the ongoing running of the project. With current employment already at 650 people, it is now the biggest construction site in Ireland. "From a national perspective the Goodbody report also estimated that the Corrib Gas project will contribute over €3 billion to Ireland's GDP over its lifespan, supplying 60 per cent of the country's natural gas needs at peak production." Mr Brennan said the risk to Ireland because of its dependence on imported gas was significant, and exposes the country to risks of supply interruption and price volatility. "In the midst of all the controversy surrounding the Corrib project, we sometimes overlook the fact that gas from this field can provide us with a safe and secure energy supply for many years to come." He enumerated the benefits to the West, saying towns connected to the line would become more attractive for inward investment, thus promoting balanced regional development. In conclusion, Mr Brennan said: "This is something we should all be working together to achieve as it will have cost implications for every household and business in the country." |
