Home décor store Habitat has closed its outlets in the Republic of Ireland after falling sales and rising costs made it "impossible to trade" through its financial difficulties. Over 60 full and part-time workers at the company's Galway and Dublin outlets were notified last Thursday evening that they no longer had jobs, and the stores closed their doors for the last time on Friday at 5pm. A statement from the stores' operator, Conai Designs (Ireland), said, "It is with deepest regret that we at Conai Designs (Ireland) Ltd. have to announce the closure of our Habitat Franchise stores in Ireland with immediate effect. "Due to a severe downturn in sales in our Galway and Dublin stores, it has become impossible to trade through the subsequent financial difficulties, particularly in light of the current economic environment." The company apologized to customers for any difficulties caused and said it has set up a dedicated customer enquiries email address for customers who have paid for orders with either store, at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it However, a representative declined to respond to questions from the Galway Independent in relation to employee prospects. The company is currently in the process of appointing a liquidator. |
