A lecturer at GMIT has found her public profile raised since becoming the presenter of the popular new TG4 programme An Teach Glas..

2702 Breda Joyce from Rosmuc, a lecturer in Civil Engineering at GMIT, is the co-presenter of the new six-part series about energy efficiency in the home. An Teach Glas is broadcast on Tuesdays from 8pm to 8.30pm and repeated on Saturdays from 8.45pm to 9.15pm on TG4. Breda co-presents the programme with Tommy Standun.

The theme of the series is energy efficiency in the building, renovation and use of houses and apartments. The aim is to inform people on the best, most cost-effective means of achieving energy efficiency in their homes, thus saving money and achieving a good rating in the new Energy Performance for Buildings Rating (BER) scheme.

The first phase of the new BER scheme starts this year and will involve all newly built homes, which are for sale, having to be assessed for energy performance. In the next couple of years all homes offered for sale will have to be rated.

In the TG4 series the An Teach Glas team travel around the country talking to homeowners, green technology installers, and various experts in the field to see best (and worst!) practice with regard to energy matters in homes.

Breda got involved because she has a particular interest in the topic having recently renovated an old cottage herself. She tried as much as possible to consider energy efficiency in her choices about design, technology and materials.

"I think that my civil engineering lecturing experience is a great help in being able to explain technical concepts in a simple way and knowing the level at which I should pitch the material.

"As we all know, this topic has huge relevance globally and I feel that each one of us has a responsibility to inform ourselves as to how best we can contribute to conserving energy and protecting the environment. And in so doing we can also save a substantial amount of money in our energy bills," Breda added.
