Skål is an association embracing all sectors of the travel and tourism industry, including hoteliers, travel agents, airlines, tourism media, tourism students etc which facilitates and develops a network of professionals worldwide. It promotes seminars and conferences to strengthen standards of excellence in all aspects of the industry. Through participation in local activities and events at all levels, members form connections and relationships with their industry colleagues. Through such events, ideas, opportunities and issues may be shared on a personal and business level.

According to organisers, the Galway Branch of Skål International is one of the largest and most successful in Ireland with over 100 active members including thirteen life members. In recent years Galway businesswoman Mary Bennett was elected President of World Skål and also first Lady President and acted as an ambassador for both the Skål organisation and promoted Galway and Ireland on her international excursions during her year of responsibility. During Mary Bennett's presidency, her theme for the year was 'tourism through friendship and peace', which has been carried on by her successors since then. Galway Skål dates back to 1966 having celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2006 – the local organisation continues to go from strength to strength.
