Galway-based medical devices company, Creganna Medical Devices, has opened a facility in Massachusetts in the US that will employ 30 people. The opening ceremony was jointly performed by Minister for Justice Brian Lenihan and Undersecretary Gregory Bialecki, from the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development, Massachusetts. Irish company Creganna is an industry leader in the design and manufacturing of components and sub-assemblies for medical device and life science companies. Addressing a large gathering of Creganna's local customers, staff and invited guests, Minister Lenihan spoke about the deepening economic links between America and Ireland. "Many people are aware of the American investment in Ireland but perhaps may not be fully aware that Irish companies are now making substantial investments in the United States. This greater reciprocity between our two countries will undoubtedly lead to further economic development on both sides of the Atlantic." To illustrate this reciprocity, Minister Lenihan explained, "Over the last seven years, Irish companies have increased their presence in the US market fivefold. Today, Irish companies now employ over 80,000 people in the US." Undersecretary Bialecki, speaking on behalf of the State of Massachusetts commented, "Creganna's decision to locate in Massachusetts illustrates the vibrancy of the Med Tech sector in this state. We expect the sector will continue to thrive under the recently passed MA LifeScience Bill where $1 billion will be invested in this industry over the next ten years." Creganna representative, Alan Crean spoke about the company's plan for its Marlborough manufacturing facility. "This facility is the beachhead for a program of expansion and development in the US," he commented. "Creganna has consistently demonstrated strong business growth and we have ambitious plans for our Marlborough site to follow this growth path." The company expects to create additional employment and to expand its manufacturing footprint in Marlborough during 2008. Acknowledging the support of Enterprise Ireland, the government agency responsible for the development and promotion of Irish companies in export markets, Alan Crean said, "The local offices of Enterprise Ireland have been an invaluable resource for Creganna, providing assistance and on-the-ground support for our development in the US market." Creganna is a leader in the design and manufacturing of delivery devices for minimally invasive medical products and is Ireland's largest indigenous company in the medical device sector. |
