The team behind the Galway based SpunOut.ie have this week picked up an Eircom Golden Spiders Internet Award.

SpunOut.ie, which is an online initiative combining an innovative platform for youth media, information, support and advocacy, won the best community and charity website in a award ceremony at Dublin's Burlington Hotel.

The Golden Spiders Awards honour outstanding achievements online and are considered a mark of excellence in web-based business strategies.

SpunOut.ie has a growing reputation for innovation and effectiveness when it comes to reaching and engaging young people. It creatively taps into Internet culture to provide information, support and opportunities on youth health, lifestyle and citizenship issues.

It does this by providing text and multimedia resources covering topics such as alcohol, drugs, mental health, sexual health, music, politics and the environment, as well as through a searchable support services directory and interactive discussion forums. It's a formula that is popular with young people and is receiving increased recognition as the way forward in empowering young people.

Following the award ceremony, spokesperson Ruairí McKiernan said the award signals a new era for SpunOut.ie. "We've spent the last couple of years in development mode struggling for funding and support. However, we're now well and truly making our mark and the future is looking very bright for us."

A representative of SpunOut.ie will shortly travel to Malaysia as a European representative at the Global Knowledge Partnership where they will meet the world's leading innovators in information communications technology and social change.
