The Board of Galway Chamber decided at its recent monthly meeting to both support a 'Yes' vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty and to urge members of Galway Chamber to do likewise. This decision was reached following a period of consultation as well as a full debate. The decision to urge a 'Yes' vote on Lisbon will involve Galway Chamber disseminating information on the Treaty to its members in the coming days. President of Galway Chamber, Peter Allen, said that the outcome was arrived at having considered the 'yes' and 'no' views, the views of all major political parties, and he was happy that the urging of a 'Yes' vote to Lisbon is in the best interests of business in the West of Ireland and in Ireland as a whole. "The Lisbon Treaty represents another important and necessary step towards a more effective and efficient European Union. Irish business and the Irish people have benefited greatly from being part of the EU as it has evolved from a loose coming together of six countries which grew to nine and then 12 and, which in 2005, expanded to a solid economic block of 27 countries. "At the global economic level it is important that the EU functions efficiently. The Lisbon Treaty brings to fruition over seven years of debate, discussion and negotiation by representatives of the 27 EU Countries, including Ireland, and on behalf of Galway Chamber of Commerce and Industry I encourage Chamber members to vote 'Yes' in support of this Treaty," said Mr Allen. The Irish Alliance for Europe has welcomed the position of Chambers Ireland on the issue. |
