A Galway accountant has come sixth in the world in her financial accounting and tax exams, beating off competition from students around the globe.

Marie Keehan, an avid GAA fan from Tubber, Co. Galway, came first in Ireland in the same exam, and also in management accounting performance evaluation.

Marie, who works in Global Treasury in AIB's Capital Markets Section professes to have been "shocked and surprised" when she heard of her excellent performance while on a holiday in Thailand.

At only 22 years of age, Marie has already achieved an impressive academic portfolio with a BA in Economics & Law from NUI, Galway and a Masters in Economics & Finance from NUI, Maynooth. Marie hopes to continue working in the area of Treasury Services or Corporate Banking and is particularly interested in dealing in foreign currency for external clients. She will continue taking the CIMA exams, aiming for the TOPCIMA in August 2008.

Congratulating Marie on her impressive results, Tiernan O'Mahoney, President CIMA Ireland, said: "This is yet another remarkable achievement by an Irish student. It highlights the talent this island has to offer both at home and abroad and is a great examples of the professional and energetic approach to life now visible throughout modern Ireland."

CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) is the only international accountancy body with a sole focus on business and has over 6,000 members and students in Ireland.

It is a world-leading professional institute that offers an internationally recognised qualification in management accountancy, focusing on accounting in business, in both the private and public sectors.

CIMA is the voice of over 158,000 members and students in 161 countries and is responsible for the education and training of management accountants who work in industry, commerce and the not-for-profit sector.
