The Equality Authority and Galway Chamber will host a briefing meeting with the community and voluntary sector and local employers on Friday, 9 May. The event will take place in the Galway Bay Hotel. The Equality Authority was set up to promote equality of opportunity and to combat discrimination in the areas covered by the equality legislation. The Employment Equality Acts prohibit discrimination in the workplace and in vocational training. The Equal Status Acts prohibit discrimination in the provision of goods and services, education and accommodation. Both Acts cover the grounds of gender, marital status, family status, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, religion and membership of the Traveller community. Equality legislation has significant implications for enterprises in the areas of employment and provision of services. The Equality Authority is preparing a new Strategic Plan for the period 2009-2011 and is meeting with community and voluntary organisations and employers, to provide an opportunity to brief them on its current work and to listen to their experiences and suggestions. |
